GLOSSARY
CAPITALISM
Economic political system in which a nation’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the people or the state.
CISHET
Cishet, used as both an adjective and a noun, describes a person who is both cisgender and heterosexual. A person is cishet if he or she is cisgender, meaning identifying with his or her assigned-at-birth gender, as well as heterosexual, or attracted exclusively to people of the opposite sex.
DIGNITY
The state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect. A composed or serious manner or style. A sense of pride in oneself; self-respect.
EQUALITY
The state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities.
MARGINALIZATION/MARGINALIZED
The treatment of a person, group, or concept as insignificant or peripheral.
OPPRESSION
The systemic and institutional abuse of power by one group at the expense of others and
the use of force to maintain this dynamic.
PATRIARCHY
a sociopolitical and cultural system that values masculinity over femininity
PRIVILEGE
a set of unearned benefits given to people who fit into a specific social group.
SUFFERAGE
The right to vote in political elections.
WHITE PRIVILEGE
inherent advantages possessed by a white person on the basis of their race in a society
characterized by racial inequality and injustice.
